ABOUT US
  • Founded in 1986 by Vernon and Paloma under the name of Sheffield Language Services, we changed our trading name to Sls Hallam.

  • From the very beginning we have specialised in English classes for Competitive Exams for the Spanish Civil Service, ESP and the Business World.

  • In 2000 we expanded our services to include translations from & into English & Spanish, and corrections of presentations, articles and essays.

  • Since December 2002 we have brought out with the publishers Editorial MAD the following materials for the preparation of COMPETITIVE EXAMS FOR SECONDARY AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE SCHOOL TEACHERS:

  • 1. "Inglés: Análisis de Textos: Preguntas, Textos y soluciones" (Dec. 2002). A selection of texts to better master the language, its lexis and written expression, besides giving practice with syntactical, morphological and phonetic aspects.
  • 2. Inglés. Programación didáctica. (Feb. 2005). Guidelines for the customised preparation of your syllabus design together with two samples of syllabus design: one for the 1st, the other for the 4th year of ESO.
  • 3. Inglés. Volumen Práctico. (Jan. 2006). Guidelines and practice in different types of text analysis, literary and cohesive devices, using real texts in class, strategies and practice with translations - both prose and unseen, basic phonetic transcription, written exam essays and giving oral presentation plus various exercises on cognates, phrasal verbs, idioms, proverbs, homophones, homonyms, hypernyms, hyponyms, synonyms and antonyms. AND – INCLUDED IN THIS VOLUME – 16 COMPLETE WORK SESSIONS WITH EXTRA ACTIVITIES AND GUIDELINES FOR LANGUAGE PRACTICE AND THE SYLLABUS DESIGN.

  •    John Vernon Nash   

    British. Degree in French & Spanish. (Combined Honours) (Birmingham University-UK). Higher National Diploma in Business Studies -Distinction- (Sheffield Hallam University) and Diploma in Marketing (Inst. of Marketing of London).

    Diploma (Associate) in French & Spanish of the "Institute of Linguists" (London) in 1967. Trained initially in the Business world and with 8 ½ year-experience in industrial market research in Western Europe for a British steel firm, he later took his B. A. in French and Spanish. He has over 20 years' experience as an English teacher.

    Since 1985 he has specialised in English classes for firms & for candidates for the Competitive exams of the Spanish Civil Service (Ministry of Economy), in economic/financial English, and ESP (Work interviews, Language & Culture, Exam preparation, etc.).

    He has wide experience in the correction of essays and presentations written by non-natives and in translations from Spanish into English on various issues. He is an expert in business, economics, finance & cultural topics and in current affairs.


       Paloma González   

    Spanish. Degree in English Philology (Complutense University. Madrid), Cambridge Proficiency Certificate (A) with Translation and Diploma in English of the Institute of Linguists (London) in 1982, she was an Associate Member of the Institute for a year. She followed an Interpreter course -with distinction- in English and Spanish, sponsored by the Comunidad de Madrid) in 2001.

    She was a Secondary school English teacher at 2 private schools (1981-84) and a Secondary School English teacher at a state school after passing the corresponding competitive exam (1985-86).

    Since 1986 she has been in charge of the administration and course co-ordination at SLS/Hallam. She has specialised in materials design and in preparing candidates for the Financial Controllers', Labour Inspectors' and English Teachers' competitive exams in English.

    She has experience in academic translations on various topics since 1986 and became a professional translator in 2000.

    She produces the translations into Spanish and some of the translations from Spanish into English, which are always supervised, corrected and edited by Vernon Nash.

    She specialises in education legislation, education, UE, literature and the Arts, ICT, press releases for high-tech and service firms, social issues, the environment, journalism, business (general and legal), web pages, medicine and the livestock industry.
